这首What Child Is This的歌词作者是威廉.查特顿迪克斯(William Chatterton Dix,)， 1865年写作这首圣诞颂歌。
是由当时迪克斯担任保险公司经理，正遭到严重的疾病，当身体恢复时，他受到了一次属灵的更新，于是他写了这首赞美诗，包括这首『奇妙圣婴』，随后采用传统的英语民歌"绿袖子(Greensleeves)"的曲调。
虽然这首圣诞颂歌是写在英格兰，但它今天在美国比在英格兰更流行。
