1984年，英国歌手菲尔·科林斯和鲍勃·格尔多夫召集了十余位歌手录制了歌曲《Do they know it's Christmas》，为非洲饥民筹集了许多善款。
人民挨饿的消息同时也震惊了迈克尔·杰克逊和莱昂内尔·里奇，两人认为自己该做点什么。于是他们合写了这首歌曲。两人费了四天的时间写作曲，里奇先完成一部分，杰克逊看到后灵感大发，一夜之间就把全曲写好。
1985年1月28日，全美音乐奖颁奖典礼结束后，迈克尔杰克逊号召45位歌手来到位于洛杉矶的A&M录音室，花了一晚上时间录制出了《We Are The World》。
