他们有一个合唱团(有两个男高音和4个女高音）和一列管弦乐队（3个小提琴、两个中提琴、两个大提琴和一个直立式贝斯）。
Epica乐队混合了哥特金属和交响金属其他成分还有力量金属、前卫金属。吉他手Ad Sluijter形容到乐队就像“一座桥把哥特金属和力量连接起来”。主唱Simone Simons表示，偏爱把它描述为交响金属。而Mark Jansen并不介意别人把它称为哥特金属。
Epica的音乐是盛气凌人的、极端的。从字面意义上看：Epica是宏伟壮丽的，和其他一些被屈服的、自省的表现精神。乐队还有一些前卫的倾向，同时哥特的大气和多愁善感也表现在音乐中。
Epica他们的歌里有两种极端表现：一是死腔，二是歌曲的气质。加上轻快音调优美的女声，形成鲜明的对比。
他们运用了许多交响金属和哥德金属乐队会使用的方式：一方面运用死腔，另一方面又用空灵优美的女声作为强烈对比。Eduardo Rivadavia在All Music Guide网站上说：“Epica的吸引力来自于光与暗两种极端声音的对比；巨大的吉他riff与快速的鼓点造成的沉重压力，和层层管弦乐和键盘所堆栈的悦耳音乐互相对比。”Simone Simons则用在次女高音音域的歌剧式唱腔演唱歌曲，但有时她也会演唱“毫无瑕疵、带有丰富情感的纯净女低音。”Mark Jansen的死腔“虽然是用来衬托Simons的歌声，但是在于音乐平衡度和多样化上非常重要。”乐队也会聘请合唱团和交响乐队去增加音乐上的装饰，像是吟诵字句和演唱拉丁文或阿拉伯文的歌词。
